POLYMASON

Low poly acacia tree, built to your size

A low poly acacia tree made with PolyMason
1,069 triangles at 5.5 m, as PolyMason proposes it

Build this acacia

The classic savanna tree, with limbs rising from a short trunk into one flat plate. As proposed, the acacia tree is 1,069 triangles at 5.5 m, with foliage as one wrapped shell. You can take it from 3 to 8 m, and every other control stays within what an acacia tree can be.

The flat-topped acacia is the tree on every safari poster. Limbs rise from a short trunk into a single flat plate of foliage. It's the tree for a savanna level, a waterhole, or a wide shot of the Serengeti at sunset. It works best as a silhouette against a bright sky, and silhouettes are something low poly does well.

The flat plate is the shell foliage with its depth kept low. If you make the plate much thicker, the tree stops looking like an acacia. Bough angle sets how wide the vase shape under the plate is. Real acacias range from scrubby, umbrella-sized trees to tall ones, and the builder's height range covers both. One or two on the horizon is usually enough. If you add many more, the scene starts to look like a forest, and a savanna is mostly grass. For a sunset shot, the billboard version may be all you need.

What you can change

  • Trunk: height, diameter, taper, sides, lean, curve and gnarl, with bark from the species' colors or any color you pick.
  • Boughs: count, rings or spiral, where they leave the trunk, angle, length, thickness, curve, and twigs.
  • Foliage: style, size, spread, complexity (your triangle budget) and two greens.
  • Export: LOD1 and LOD2, sapling and young versions, dead, stump, felled, logs and billboards.

The export is a zip with OBJ, STL and 3MF. The OBJ uses the shared palette texture and has flat normals in the file. Models are in meters and stand at the origin, and the zip includes whichever levels of detail and other versions you select. The trees page covers the formats, and the OBJ guide covers importing.

Questions

How many triangles is the acacia tree?
1,069 as proposed. The complexity slider takes it down to a few hundred or up for a hero tree, and the export adds LOD1 and LOD2.
Can I change the height?
Yes, between 3 and 8 m, and the trunk's diameter, taper and lean with it.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads.
Can I use it in a commercial game?
Everything you build here is yours. Use it in any project, commercial or not, with no attribution required.
