Low poly elm tree, built to your size

A low poly elm tree made with PolyMason
3,103 triangles at 13.0 m, as PolyMason proposes it

Build this elm

Vase-shaped, with limbs arching up and out from a low fork and a crown wider than it is tall. As proposed, the elm tree is 3,103 triangles at 13.0 m, with foliage as clumps of leaves. You can take it from 10 to 16 m, and every other control stays within what an elm tree can be.

An elm is shaped like a vase. The limbs arch up and out from a low fork, and the crown is wider than it is tall, with its highest points at the edges. It's the tree that lined American main streets a century ago, and it also suits a New England common or the edge of a village in northern Europe. When people imagine a big shade tree, this is usually the shape they have in mind. A double row of elms will arch over a road and make a tunnel.

The vase comes from bough angle and length. Have the boughs leave at a steep angle and run long, with the clumps out at their ends. Keep the trunk short and the fork low. Dutch elm disease killed most of these trees, so the dead version has more use here than it does for other species. Placing a dead elm next to a live one is an easy way to suggest the disease passed through. The felled trunk is big enough to block a path.

What you can change

  • Trunk: height, diameter, taper, sides, lean, curve and gnarl, with bark from the species' colors or any color you pick.
  • Boughs: count, rings or spiral, where they leave the trunk, angle, length, thickness, curve, and twigs.
  • Foliage: style, size, spread, complexity (your triangle budget) and two greens.
  • Export: LOD1 and LOD2, sapling and young versions, dead, stump, felled, logs and billboards.

The export is a zip with OBJ, STL and 3MF. The OBJ uses the shared palette texture and has flat normals in the file. Models are in meters and stand at the origin, and the zip includes whichever levels of detail and other versions you select. The trees page covers the formats, and the OBJ guide covers importing.

Questions

How many triangles is the elm tree?
3,103 as proposed. The complexity slider takes it down to a few hundred or up for a hero tree, and the export adds LOD1 and LOD2.
Can I change the height?
Yes, between 10 and 16 m, and the trunk's diameter, taper and lean with it.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads.
Can I use it in a commercial game?
Everything you build here is yours. Use it in any project, commercial or not, with no attribution required.
