POLYMASON

Low poly aspen tree, built to your size

A low poly aspen tree made with PolyMason
2,065 triangles at 9.5 m, as PolyMason proposes it

Build this aspen

A pale slender stem, bare for most of its height, a small crown that shimmers. As proposed, the aspen tree is 2,065 triangles at 9.5 m, with foliage as clumps of leaves. You can take it from 7 to 12 m, and every other control stays within what an aspen tree can be.

Aspens grow in stands of hundreds that all look alike, which makes them a good match for a builder. Each one is a pale, slender stem that's bare for most of its height, with a small crown of light, cool green. You'll find them in the Rockies, and they work well where a conifer forest gives way to meadow. With gold foliage they're the standard tree for a fall level in the mountains.

Set both greens to a bright gold and a stand of aspens looks like October. Keep the trunk slim and pale. If you're unsure about crown size, go smaller, since a big crown makes it look like some other tree. A grove is many copies of one tree, so levels of detail and billboards save more here than they do for most species. LOD2 and a billboard will cover the back of the grove for very little. The dead version is pale and bare, and it blends in well among the live ones.

What you can change

  • Trunk: height, diameter, taper, sides, lean, curve and gnarl, with bark from the species' colors or any color you pick.
  • Boughs: count, rings or spiral, where they leave the trunk, angle, length, thickness, curve, and twigs.
  • Foliage: style, size, spread, complexity (your triangle budget) and two greens.
  • Export: LOD1 and LOD2, sapling and young versions, dead, stump, felled, logs and billboards.

The export is a zip with OBJ, STL and 3MF. The OBJ uses the shared palette texture and has flat normals in the file. Models are in meters and stand at the origin, and the zip includes whichever levels of detail and other versions you select. The trees page covers the formats, and the OBJ guide covers importing.

Questions

How many triangles is the aspen tree?
2,065 as proposed. The complexity slider takes it down to a few hundred or up for a hero tree, and the export adds LOD1 and LOD2.
Can I change the height?
Yes, between 7 and 12 m, and the trunk's diameter, taper and lean with it.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads.
Can I use it in a commercial game?
Everything you build here is yours. Use it in any project, commercial or not, with no attribution required.
