POLYMASON

Low poly juniper tree, built to your size

A low poly juniper tree made with PolyMason
3,240 triangles at 3.8 m, as PolyMason proposes it

Build this juniper

Bushy and gnarled. The trunk forks near the ground into twisted limbs under a rounded crown. As proposed, the juniper tree is 3,240 triangles at 3.8 m, with foliage as clumps of leaves. You can take it from 2.5 to 5 m, and every other control stays within what a juniper tree can be.

Junipers grow where it's too dry and windy for bigger trees. That includes high desert, canyon rims, a mesa in Utah, mountain scree, and Mediterranean hillsides. The tree is low and bushy, with a trunk that forks near the ground into twisted limbs under a rounded crown. Because it's short, it tends to end up in the foreground, right next to the path the player walks.

Turn the gnarl all the way up and add some lean. A straight juniper looks like a shrub. The greens are dark with a gray-blue cast, and the bark is a shredded red-brown. The tree is small, so your triangle budget goes further, and you can afford more clumps than you'd expect for its size. Build several at different sizes, since junipers grow alone and no two look alike. The dead version, silver and twisted, works well as a landscape prop.

What you can change

  • Trunk: height, diameter, taper, sides, lean, curve and gnarl, with bark from the species' colors or any color you pick.
  • Boughs: count, rings or spiral, where they leave the trunk, angle, length, thickness, curve, and twigs.
  • Foliage: style, size, spread, complexity (your triangle budget) and two greens.
  • Export: LOD1 and LOD2, sapling and young versions, dead, stump, felled, logs and billboards.

The export is a zip with OBJ, STL and 3MF. The OBJ uses the shared palette texture and has flat normals in the file. Models are in meters and stand at the origin, and the zip includes whichever levels of detail and other versions you select. The trees page covers the formats, and the OBJ guide covers importing.

Questions

How many triangles is the juniper tree?
3,240 as proposed. The complexity slider takes it down to a few hundred or up for a hero tree, and the export adds LOD1 and LOD2.
Can I change the height?
Yes, between 2.5 and 5 m, and the trunk's diameter, taper and lean with it.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads.
Can I use it in a commercial game?
Everything you build here is yours. Use it in any project, commercial or not, with no attribution required.
