POLYMASON

Low poly oak tree, built to your size

A low poly oak tree made with PolyMason
312 triangles at 9.5 m, as PolyMason proposes it

Build this oak

Short thick trunk forking low into a broad crown. As proposed, the oak tree is 312 triangles at 9.5 m, with foliage as leaf cards. You can take it from 7 to 12 m, and every other control stays within what an oak tree can be.

When a scene calls for a tree and nothing more specific, use the oak. It has a short, thick trunk that forks low into a broad crown wider than it is tall, which is the tree most people picture by default. It fits the English countryside, a village green, a fairy-tale forest, a medieval level, or the square of a fantasy town. Every asset pack includes an oak, which is a good reason to build your own.

Where the boughs leave the trunk decides what kind of oak you get. A low fork and a wide angle give you a spreading parkland oak. A higher start gives you a straighter forest oak. The foliage is leaf cards, which sit in the middle of the cost range, and the complexity slider trades the number of cards against triangles. Raise the gnarl for an old tree. All the export versions suit an oak. The stump, felled trunk and logs work as woodcutter props, and the dead oak is the classic haunted tree.

What you can change

  • Trunk: height, diameter, taper, sides, lean, curve and gnarl, with bark from the species' colors or any color you pick.
  • Boughs: count, rings or spiral, where they leave the trunk, angle, length, thickness, curve, and twigs.
  • Foliage: style, size, spread, complexity (your triangle budget) and two greens.
  • Export: LOD1 and LOD2, sapling and young versions, dead, stump, felled, logs and billboards.

The export is a zip with OBJ, STL and 3MF. The OBJ uses the shared palette texture and has flat normals in the file. Models are in meters and stand at the origin, and the zip includes whichever levels of detail and other versions you select. The trees page covers the formats, and the OBJ guide covers importing.

Questions

How many triangles is the oak tree?
312 as proposed. The complexity slider takes it down to a few hundred or up for a hero tree, and the export adds LOD1 and LOD2.
Can I change the height?
Yes, between 7 and 12 m, and the trunk's diameter, taper and lean with it.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads.
Can I use it in a commercial game?
Everything you build here is yours. Use it in any project, commercial or not, with no attribution required.
