Low poly Douglas fir tree, built to your size

A low poly Douglas fir tree made with PolyMason
180 triangles at 19.0 m, as PolyMason proposes it

Build this Douglas fir

A tall straight spire of dense level whorls, nearly to the ground. As proposed, the Douglas fir tree is 180 triangles at 19.0 m, with foliage as stacked cones. You can take it from 14 to 24 m, and every other control stays within what a Douglas fir tree can be.

Douglas fir is the tall conifer in the set. It's a straight spire of dense, level whorls that start near the ground. Think Pacific Northwest, mountain forest, timber country. It's a good choice when a scene needs height but a redwood would be too much. Put a few behind smaller trees to build a skyline, or stand one alone as a landmark.

The default cone count is high so the whorls stay close together, and that costs triangles. In a large scene, lower the complexity and rely on LOD1 and LOD2, since a tree this tall spends most of its time far from the camera. Its taper is gentle, which is why it looks tall instead of fat, so go easy on the trunk diameter. If you're building a logging scene, select the felled and logs versions at export. The logs match this tree's bark and scale.

What you can change

  • Trunk: height, diameter, taper, sides, lean, curve and gnarl, with bark from the species' colors or any color you pick.
  • Boughs: count, rings or spiral, where they leave the trunk, angle, length, thickness, curve, and twigs.
  • Foliage: style, size, spread, complexity (your triangle budget) and two greens.
  • Export: LOD1 and LOD2, sapling and young versions, dead, stump, felled, logs and billboards.

The export is a zip with OBJ, STL and 3MF. The OBJ uses the shared palette texture and has flat normals in the file. Models are in meters and stand at the origin, and the zip includes whichever levels of detail and other versions you select. The trees page covers the formats, and the OBJ guide covers importing.

Questions

How many triangles is the Douglas fir tree?
180 as proposed. The complexity slider takes it down to a few hundred or up for a hero tree, and the export adds LOD1 and LOD2.
Can I change the height?
Yes, between 14 and 24 m, and the trunk's diameter, taper and lean with it.
Is it free?
Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on downloads.
Can I use it in a commercial game?
Everything you build here is yours. Use it in any project, commercial or not, with no attribution required.
